West Riding Opera gave its first stage performance in 1954, Smetana's The Bartered Bride. This was produced by Anthony Besch who, after producing a further two shows with the Company, went on to develop a distinguished theatrical career, producing in major Opera Houses throughout the World, including Covent Garden. Since then West Riding Opera have staged a further 40 productions. Gounod's Faust being the 41st in 2005.The Musical Director is Martin Binks, who has been an ever present in this capacity, since his first production in 1969, Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor. All performances, up to 2005, were presented at the Leeds Civic Theatre. However 2006 was the first performance in the brand new, state of the art, venue of The Carriageworks Theatre a new start for both performers and audience.
